Musibau Shittu, one of Nigeria’s top wheelchair basketball players, has launched the FOLMUS Disabled Sports Academy at the National Institute for Sports in Lagos. The academy aims to nurture young athletes with disabilities, offering opportunities across multiple para-sports, not just basketball.

Shittu explained that the academy was inspired by his own experiences. “Sports changed my life, and I want others to experience the same,” he said, noting that many young people with disabilities lack support from their families or communities.

Although the academy doesn’t yet have a formal office, it already runs training sessions and works to build athletes’ confidence. One of its trainees recently won two gold medals in badminton at a West African competition, showcasing the academy’s growing impact.

Currently funded through Shittu’s personal resources and small contributions from friends, the academy is seeking partnerships with government and private organizations to provide better facilities, funding, and competitive opportunities for disabled athletes.

The academy’s programs are managed by gym instructor and basketball player Segun Bailey, who coordinates training and development for aspiring para-athletes.
