PDP Warns Defection of Rivers Governor Signals Dangerous Slide for Nigeria’s Democracy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent defection of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the move represents a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Fubara publicly announced his departure from the PDP during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, citing lack of protection from his former party and pledging his full support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.

In response, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described the defection as “pitiful” and self-inflicted, arguing that Fubara “willingly travelled the path” that led to his exit. The party also expressed concern that the trend of defections could pave the way for a one‑party dominance and undermine democratic competition in Nigeria.

PDP further warned that the defection — coming a few days after a group of lawmakers from the state assembly also jumped ship — underscores a growing pattern that threatens to erode political pluralism and democratic norms in the country. The party called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and work to protect the country’s democratic values.
