Agulu Community Reclaims Historic Deity Artefact After 120 Years

After more than a century away, the ancestral artefact known as “Haba Agulu” has been returned to its original home in Agulu community, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The artefact was seized by British colonial authorities in 1905 and kept for decades before being handed back to the community on October 31, 2025.

To mark the occasion, community leaders and state officials laid the foundation for a permanent heritage museum that will house Haba Agulu and other cultural treasures, aiming to preserve the community’s history and boost tourism.

Speakers at the event described the return as a major cultural victory, highlighting the artefact’s intact original markings and beads, preserved for 120 years, and expressed hope that the museum will attract visitors worldwide while safeguarding Agulu’s legacy for future generations.
