Former Kano Anti-Corruption Chief Links Graft to Nigeria’s Drug Menace

Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, the former head of Kano State’s anti-corruption agency, has highlighted a close link between corruption and the country’s drug problem. He argued that corruption fuels drug trafficking by providing the financial support that allows criminal networks to thrive, stressing that tackling graft must go hand in hand with combating illegal drugs.

Magaji noted that corrupt officials, politicians, and intermediaries who protect or launder money for illicit activities play a key role in sustaining the drug trade. He urged authorities to dismantle these corruption networks to weaken the financial backbone of drug traffickers and called for a coordinated approach by anti-graft and law enforcement agencies to address both challenges simultaneously.

He further emphasized the importance of public accountability, urging citizens to hold leaders and institutions responsible. Magaji believes that only a united effort from civil society, security agencies, and anti-corruption bodies can successfully break the link between corruption and drug trafficking in Nigeria.
