Aviation Minister Says Government Cannot Control Airline Ticket Prices

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has emphasized that the government has no authority to set prices for private businesses, including airlines. His statement comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of airfare across the country.

Keyamo explained that the aviation sector operates under a deregulated system. This means airlines are free to determine their ticket prices based on market forces rather than government directives.

According to the minister, attempts to control ticket prices in a deregulated market would be both impractical and unlawful. He stressed that the government’s role is limited to regulation and oversight, not direct pricing.

The minister’s comments highlight the challenges travelers face as airlines adjust fares in response to fuel costs, operational expenses, and other economic factors. Passengers are left to navigate a system where ticket prices fluctuate without government intervention.

Keyamo called on the public to understand the realities of a deregulated industry. He noted that while the government monitors the sector to ensure safety and compliance, it cannot dictate how much airlines charge for their services.
