FCCPC Launches Expanded Probe into Soaring Airfares on Key Domestic Routes

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has broadened its investigation into sharp increases in domestic airline ticket prices on routes serving the South‑East and South‑South regions, amid mounting public complaints as the holiday travel period approaches.

In a statement issued by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, the commission said it is closely reviewing airlines’ pricing templates and ticketing behaviours to determine if the recent fare hikes violate provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.

The expanded probe follows a surge in consumer reports alleging coordinated or exploitative pricing practices by some carriers. According to the regulator, it will investigate whether the fare spikes undermine fair competition and harm consumer interests.

The commission clarified that while it does not set prices for services, it is empowered to investigate potentially anti‑competitive conduct. The inquiry targets operators on the affected domestic routes and is ongoing, with updates expected as findings develop.

This action comes after continued public outcry over sudden ticket price increases and follows earlier legal action by a major airline seeking to restrain the FCCPC from examining its pricing model.
