Former First Lady Aisha Buhari revealed that her late husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, began locking his room after hearing gossip in Aso Rock that she was plotting to kill him. She said the rumors made him change his habits, miss meals and stop taking his supplements for about a year. According to Aisha, the disruption to his feeding routine was the real trigger for his 2017 health crisis, not any mysterious illness or poisoning.
Aisha explained that the president’s strict nutrition plan, which she had managed for years, fell apart when fear and gossip took over. The loss of that routine led to a rapid decline in his health, culminating in two extended trips to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, totaling 154 days in 2017. During that period, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo assumed presidential duties.
She also described a climate of mistrust at the presidency, alleging surveillance and the bugging of the president’s office, which she believes added to his stress. Aisha dismissed long‑standing rumors about a body double, calling them absurd and attributing them to poor communication.
Her account appears in a 600‑page biography titled _From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari_, launched at the State House. The book traces Buhari’s life from his early days in Daura to his final hours in a London hospital in July 2025.
