Tinubu Urges Governors to Enforce Full Local Government Autonomy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors across the country to fully implement local government autonomy, stressing that it is vital to strengthening grassroots governance. He made the appeal during an APC Caucus meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President emphasized that genuine autonomy cannot exist without the direct release of funds to local government councils. According to him, financial independence is central to empowering councils to function effectively.

Tinubu further noted that any form of autonomy that bypasses direct funding undermines the intent of the policy. He insisted that councils must receive their allocations without interference to deliver meaningful development at the local level.

He also urged governors to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter, describing adherence to the judgment as a critical step toward ensuring true and sustainable local government autonomy nationwide.
