Enugu Court Orders Remand of Suspects Tied to Commissioner Amid Mburubu Violence Claims

A High Court in Enugu has ordered that several suspected hoodlums allegedly connected to an Enugu State Commissioner be remanded in custody as part of ongoing investigations into violent clashes in the Mburubu community. The suspects were arraigned following allegations that they were involved in attacks linked to tensions over leadership and chieftaincy disputes in the area.

The court’s decision comes amid community leaders’ accusations that the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Prince Lawrence Ezeh, either sponsored or was linked to armed men who have been accused of instigating unrest in the community. The Commissioner has publicly denied these claims, stating that the allegations are politically motivated.

Violence in Mburubu reportedly escalated from longstanding disagreements over the rightful traditional leadership of the community, with rival factions contesting claims to the Igwe stool and local youths resisting perceived unlawful actions. In response to the unrest, the court not only ordered the suspects remanded but also granted motions restraining further arrests and intimidation of youths pending further legal proceedings.

The developments highlight deepening community tensions in the Nkanu East Local Government Area, where fears of further violence and alleged misuse of power have drawn the attention of legal authorities and residents alike.
