The Benue State Government has begun disbursing ₦1.275 billion raised from private donors to the victims of the violent Yelwata attacks. Officials say the funds will cover immediate relief such as food, non‑food items and nutrition support, as well as longer‑term projects including housing reconstruction and conditional cash transfers for vulnerable families.
A technical committee led by Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber, is overseeing the process to ensure transparency and fair allocation. The committee reports that over 7,000 bags of rice and other food supplies are being distributed, along with blankets, toiletries and other essential household goods.
In addition to emergency aid, the state plans to build a cluster settlement in Yelwata, drill three boreholes for clean water, and implement water‑and‑sanitation projects in the area. These initiatives aim to restore dignity and promote sustainable recovery for internally displaced persons and host communities alike.
The intervention follows a June attack that left many dead and many more displaced, prompting a wave of nationwide sympathy and contributions, including a notable donation from the wife of the President, Senator Remi Tinubu. The government has expressed gratitude to all donors and partners for their support in addressing the humanitarian crisis.
The distribution exercise is expected to run for a week, with officials committed to moving from short‑term relief toward lasting solutions that improve health, safety and livelihoods for those affected.
