Ondo University SSANU Chairman Claims Vice‑Chancellor Orchestrated Death Threats

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, says its chairman, Comrade Oluwaseyi Gbenga Abayomi, has been receiving death threats after a heated town‑hall meeting in November. The union alleges that the vice‑chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, publicly vilified union leaders and spread false claims about salaries and appointments, creating a hostile atmosphere that led to the intimidation.

In a petition to the police, SSANU requested immediate protection for Abayomi and other officials, warning that the university’s management could be complicit in the threats. The union stressed that such actions undermine academic freedom and staff welfare, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged harassment.

University authorities have yet to issue a formal response to the accusations. SSANU has called for a meeting with the vice‑chancellor and senior management to address the concerns and restore a safe working environment for all staff.

The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between university administrations and staff unions across Nigeria, as workers continue to push for better working conditions, transparency, and respect for labor rights.
