Malawi’s Vice-President has come under intense public criticism following revelations that a trip to the United Kingdom to attend her husband’s 80th birthday celebration is being financed with public funds estimated at about $1.3 million.

Official travel details indicate that the Vice-President is scheduled to be in the UK for over two weeks, accompanied by a large delegation that reportedly includes security personnel, aides, medical staff, family members, and associates. The visit is said to have no clearly stated official government engagements.

The development has sparked outrage among citizens and civil society groups, who argue that state resources should not be used for private celebrations, especially amid Malawi’s ongoing economic difficulties.

Critics say the expenditure contradicts government calls for austerity, noting that many Malawians are grappling with food shortages, fuel scarcity, and limited access to essential healthcare services.

Although the Vice-President’s office has acknowledged the trip, it has provided little explanation to justify the scale or cost of the expenditure. Accountability advocates insist the incident raises serious concerns about the misuse of public funds and leadership priorities.
