Opay Warns Nigerians Against Festive Season Scam, Denies Any Cash Giveaway

Fintech platform Opay has formally dismissed a viral social media message claiming it is distributing N5,000 to users as a Christmas bonus, calling the claim false and misleading. The message, which spread widely on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that every registered user had received the cash gift for the festive season — a claim the company says is untrue.

In a statement released on Friday, Opay emphasised that it is not running any cash giveaway or money distribution scheme during the holidays. The firm also issued a stern warning to the public to be alert to scammers using fake promotions to deceive unsuspecting users.

Opay reminded customers to never send money to strangers or share sensitive personal details, including their Bank Verification Number (BVN), with anyone. The company stressed that such information should always remain confidential to prevent fraud.

Users are urged to verify any promotional messages directly through Opay’s official channels before taking action or responding to offers that seem too good to be true.
