The Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Lagos against Nigeria’s 36 state governors, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Office of the Accountant‑General of the Federation. The suit challenges their alleged failure to account for how approximately ₦14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings has been spent since the removal of the subsidy in May 2023.
Filed as suit number FHC/L/MSC/1424/2025, the action seeks a court order compelling the defendants to provide detailed breakdowns of expenditures, including projects executed, their locations, and completion statuses. SERAP argues that while the savings have increased state and FCT revenues, many Nigerians have seen little improvement in basic services such as health and education.
SERAP emphasized that citizens have a right to know how public funds are used and that transparency is essential to Nigeria’s democratic process and constitutional principles of accountability. The organisation is urging the court to enforce disclosure to allow public scrutiny and ensure the funds are not diverted or mismanaged. No hearing date has yet been set.
