The Ogun State Government has expressed deep sympathy to world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, and the families of two British nationals who lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government described the incident as “deeply unfortunate and painful,” noting that it resulted in the loss of precious lives while others sustained injuries.

The crash occurred around the Makun axis of the busy expressway as Joshua and his aides were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. Two men travelling with him died on the spot, while Joshua and the driver sustained injuries and were immediately taken to a hospital. The hospital’s identity has been withheld for security reasons.

Preliminary reports indicate that the sports utility vehicle conveying Joshua and his associates rammed into the rear of a stationary truck. The victims’ remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, while the damaged vehicle has been taken to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division. Authorities are also working to move the truck involved to aid further investigation.

The government urged motorists to drive cautiously, particularly during the festive season when traffic volume is usually high. It also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement to safeguard lives.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families in this tragic moment. We mourn with them and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed, while also wishing the injured a speedy recovery. May God grant the families the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.
