The Executive Chairman of Aba North Local Government Area, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, has given a strong security advisory to residents ahead of New Year celebrations, calling for calm, responsible conduct during cross-over night activities.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the council chairman appealed to residents to embrace peace, reflection and thanksgiving, rather than actions capable of breaching security or endangering lives and property. He stressed that cross-over night should be observed as a period of gratitude and spiritual renewal, not disorder or lawlessness.
Hon. Iheke cautioned against the burning of tyres on major roads, popularly known as Ichu Afor, describing the practice as dangerous and disruptive to public safety. He also condemned the reckless use of fireworks, warning that turning them into tools for confrontation poses serious risks to motorists, residents and security personnel.
According to him, such acts do not represent celebration but irresponsibility, adding that Aba North would not tolerate any behaviour capable of undermining public order during the festive period.
The chairman further emphasized that security is a shared responsibility, urging parents, youths and community leaders to play active roles in maintaining peace. He called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a safe transition into the New Year.
Hon. Iheke noted that the relative peace currently enjoyed in Aba North and across Abia State is the result of deliberate policies and firm leadership under the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR. He warned against actions that could reverse the gains recorded in security.
As the year comes to an end, the Aba North chairman extended New Year greetings to residents, expressing optimism for a more peaceful and prosperous year ahead. He encouraged everyone to celebrate responsibly and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities as the council area ushers in the New Year in unity and peace.
