Anambra Widow Appeals to IGP, Alleges Police Harassment and Intimidation

A widow in Anambra State has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), raising serious concerns over alleged police intimidation and harassment that she says have made her feel unsafe and fearful for her life.

In her formal complaint, the woman detailed incidents in which she claims officers repeatedly followed, questioned and pressured her without justification. She expressed deep anxiety and distress, saying that the tactics used by the police have left her and her family living in constant fear.

According to the petition, the widow alleges that the harassment began after a personal dispute and has continued despite her efforts to seek clarity and resolution at the local level. She told journalists that police officers have approached her residence late at night, subjected her to repeated questioning, and made comments she perceived as threatening, intensifying her sense of vulnerability.

The woman appealed directly to the IGP for urgent intervention, urging police authorities to investigate the conduct of the officers involved and take appropriate action to ensure her safety. She stressed that no one should be subjected to harassment or intimidation under any circumstances, especially when their daily life and wellbeing are at stake.

Human rights watchers and community leaders have expressed support for the widow’s call for justice, noting that alleged misconduct by security personnel must be thoroughly examined to maintain public trust in law enforcement. They emphasised that the police must uphold the rule of law and respect the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of background or situation.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Anambra State Police Command were not immediately successful at the time of reporting. The situation has renewed public conversations about police conduct, civilian protection and the mechanisms available for accountability within the security agencies.

As the petition reaches the office of the IGP, many are waiting to see whether authorities will take swift action to address the widow’s allegations and ensure that law enforcement officers act within the bounds of their mandate.
