Nigeria Welcomes First Embryo Transfer‑Born Calf, Boosting Dairy Industry

A Nigerian agricultural biotechnology company has unveiled the country’s first embryo transfer‑born calf, a milestone achievement that could transform the nation’s dairy industry.

The healthy female Girolando calf was born through an embryo transfer program at Harmony Farms in Odogbolu, Ogun State, part of the firm’s Advanced Tropical Genetic Improvement Programme aimed at introducing superior cattle genetics suited for tropical conditions.

Company executives say the breakthrough signals a new era for dairy productivity in Nigeria, aligning with national efforts to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imported dairy products, and strengthen rural economies. They explained that when fully mature, Girolando cattle are expected to produce significantly higher milk yields compared with many local breeds.
