As schools reopen across Abia State today, Monday, January 12, 2026, the familiar sounds of laughter and learning once again fill the air. But unlike in previous years, this new term begins with renewed confidence, hope, and stability for pupils and parents alike.

For many years, the start of a new school term was often greeted with anxiety. Parents struggled to cope with sudden increases in school fees following the festive season, while the cost of uniforms, books and other levies forced many children to stay at home or resume late.

The situation was worsened by the poor state of public schools. During long breaks, many school premises were left unsecured, leading to vandalism, theft and neglect. In some cases, classrooms were taken over by squatters, leaving pupils and teachers to clean up debris and overgrown compounds instead of beginning lessons promptly.

That narrative has now changed.

Today, pupils are returning to well-secured, rehabilitated and properly maintained school environments. This transformation is the result of the education-focused policies of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, whose administration has made the revitalisation of public education a major priority.

Under the Abia FIRST initiative, free and compulsory basic education has been introduced, removing financial barriers that previously kept many children out of school. As a result, enrollment has increased significantly, restoring public confidence in government-owned schools.

To support this growth, the state government has carried out a transparent and merit-based recruitment of qualified teachers, strengthening the quality of instruction across schools. With a second phase of recruitment currently underway, the administration continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving learning outcomes.

In addition, school infrastructure across the state has undergone extensive renovation and upgrading. Classrooms have been refurbished, security improved, and learning facilities modernised. The introduction of Smart Schools equipped with modern technology and better sanitation further reflects a forward-looking approach to education in Abia.

As the new term begins, pupils are returning with enthusiasm, teachers with renewed professionalism, and parents with confidence in the system.

This resumption is more than a routine return to school. It is a clear reflection of purposeful leadership and effective reforms that have restored dignity, order and hope to public education in Abia State.

Today, Abia pupils are not just going back to school, they are stepping into a brighter future under Governor Alex Otti.
