The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to introduce wide-ranging reforms aimed at strengthening its relevance and contribution to national development.
The Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during the NYSC Annual Management Conference held in Jos, Plateau State. He explained that the reforms are intended to reposition the scheme to better address current social, economic, and security realities in the country.
According to him, an internal review conducted by the NYSC revealed the need to improve operational systems, enhance service delivery, and ensure that corps members are better equipped to make meaningful contributions to national growth. He stressed that the scheme must evolve in line with modern challenges, including technological advancement and population changes.
Nafiu described the NYSC as a vital national asset, noting that it mobilises thousands of young graduates annually from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. He said the proposed reforms would help harness this potential more effectively and align the programme with national development priorities.
Participants at the conference expressed support for the reform agenda, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration between the NYSC, state governments, and host communities to improve the service year experience and overall impact of the scheme.
