A non‑profit foundation has made significant progress in treating children born with clubfoot, enrolling 90 young patients in its specialised programme during December 2025. The initiative, coordinated by the Straight Child Foundation in Umuahia, Abia State, spans 23 clinics in 11 Nigerian states and focuses on early intervention to correct the congenital foot deformity.

More than seven in 10 of the children enrolled were under one year old, a key age for effective treatment that can prevent long‑term disability and improve mobility later in life. The treatment protocol involves repeated casting sessions followed by a minor corrective procedure consistent with global best practices.

Officials said treatment retention has been strong, and the foundation is working with partner hospitals to build clinical capacity, improve data systems, and boost the quality of care. Support from international partners has been credited with helping expand access and strengthen outcomes.

Public health specialists say early and well‑coordinated clubfoot treatment can dramatically improve children’s quality of life, especially in settings where access to specialist care is limited.
