Abia Women Demand Halt to Unauthorised Granite Mining in Uturu Community

Women from the Imobi Autonomous Community in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest what they described as illegal granite mining in their area. They are urging Governor Alex Otti and the state government to intervene and halt the quarry operations.

Carrying placards with messages rejecting a consent letter they say was signed by unauthorised individuals, the protesters insisted that no mining should begin without proper community approval and environmental safeguards. They also challenged claims that Lime I International Nigeria Ltd is recognised by the community, saying no legitimate community development agreement exists with the company.

Community leaders, including Madam Nkechi Uwakwe and Lolo Florence Uka, noted that the granite deposit spans three villages — Amaedi, Amanyanwu and Onuzo — and accused a small group from one village of seeking to control the site’s benefits without involving the wider community. They appealed for a proper process that includes all stakeholders.

Another leader, Mrs. Nene Orieji, highlighted environmental concerns, warning of land degradation and other hazards if mining proceeds without an environmental impact assessment or clear agreement with the community.

The traditional ruler of Imobi said some individuals had gone to Abuja to obtain a consent letter and register a mining company without consulting the community, and the protesters are demanding its revocation.

Attempts to get a response from the Abia State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.
