“Gunmen Ambush Enugu Police Patrol: Two Officers Killed, Rifles Stolen”

At around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday in Enugu State, Nigeria, unknown armed men ambushed a police patrol vehicle belonging to the Distress Response Squad (DRS) in the state capital, killing two officers and making away with their rifles.

The attack occurred at the Depot Police Detective College junction, where the patrol vehicle was stationed. During the assault, the attackers opened fire and set the vehicle ablaze, resulting in the deaths of a police inspector and a sergeant. The assailants also stole AK‑47 rifles loaded with live ammunition from the scene before fleeing.

The slain officers were members of the DRS, a unit tasked with rapid emergency and security response. The incident underscores growing concerns over deteriorating security in parts of South‑East Nigeria, where attacks on security personnel have become more frequent.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the identities of the attackers, but government officials have previously blamed violent incidents in the region on proscribed groups — claims that these groups have repeatedly denied.
