Confederation of African Football Unveils 2029 African Nations League for All 54 Countries

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled an ambitious proposal to introduce an African Nations League in 2029, a landmark competition expected to feature all 54 member associations in a single continental tournament.

CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, disclosed that the planned competition is designed to deliver high-profile encounters and reignite classic African rivalries, including fixtures such as Kenya versus Tanzania, Ghana against Nigeria, Egypt against Morocco, and Ivory Coast versus Cameroon.

According to Motsepe, the tournament will be hosted by one country, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere that brings together Africa’s best football talents under one roof. He added that the competition will take place during the FIFA international window, ensuring the participation of top African players based in leagues across the world.

The proposed format will adopt a zonal qualification system, with teams initially competing within their regional zones. Selected countries will host matches at the zonal stage, with Nigeria tipped to host fixtures involving West African teams.

Winners from each zone will progress to the final phase of the tournament, where draws will determine matchups as the continent’s best sides compete for the title.

CAF believes the African Nations League, if successfully implemented, will usher in a new chapter for African football by strengthening competition, deepening regional rivalries, and elevating the global visibility of the game across the continent.
