Former presidential candidate and ADC chieftain Peter Obi has stated that he neither owns a house nor land in Abuja and has no plans to acquire any. Speaking at a coffee hangout event in the capital, Obi explained that his decision stems from a personal philosophy of avoiding unnecessary possessions that could complicate life and distract from what he considers essential.
Obi told the audience, “I don’t have a house in Abuja, I don’t have a land, and I’m not preparing to have because I don’t need it.” He emphasized that accumulating assets often brings more stress than benefit, a principle he has consistently applied in both his public service and private career.
The former Anambra State governor shared examples from his professional life to illustrate this approach. He revealed that while serving as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), he declined the official vehicle, accommodation, and sitting allowances offered to him, opting instead to simply be informed of meeting schedules. Similarly, during his tenure as Chairman of Fidelity Bank, he refused luxury vehicles like a Mercedes 500 or Range Rover that he was entitled to.
Obi linked this minimalist lifestyle to his well-being, explaining that avoiding the burdens of entitlements and properties has helped him maintain peace of mind and good health. He added that he feels provided for by God, removing any desire for excessive material accumulation.
