The Gauteng Education Department (GED) has confirmed that one of the learners who died in Monday’s tragic scholar transport accident in Vanderbijlpark is yet to be identified.

At least 12 learners lost their lives when the minibus taxi conveying them to school collided with a truck. Several other learners, along with the driver of the minibus taxi, sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Speaking on the incident, GED spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department is working closely with affected families to support them during the difficult period and to complete the identification process.

He disclosed that the deceased learners were drawn from seven different schools across the Vaal area. According to Mabona, while the identities of 11 of the victims have been confirmed, efforts are ongoing to establish the identity of the remaining learner.

“The number of learners who passed on is 12, and out of the 12, one child remains unidentified,” Mabona said. “We are still working with the families to finalise the process so that the child can be properly identified.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, as government officials and community leaders express condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
