US Expands Military Support to Nigeria with Enhanced Intelligence Sharing and Equipment Deliveries

The United States military has announced plans to boost its support for Nigeria by increasing the sharing of intelligence and delivering more military equipment to help Abuja tackle Islamic State‑linked armed groups, a senior U.S. commander said.

According to Lieutenant General John Brennan, deputy commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the move is part of a wider effort by Washington to deepen cooperation with African countries confronting jihadist militants. The stepped‑up support includes more materiel deliveries and closer intelligence cooperation designed to improve Nigeria’s capacity in combatting violent extremist organisations.

The announcement follows recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations and comes amid broader U.S. efforts to press for more effective action against terrorism in the region. Increased coordination also reflects a shift towards more proactive joint operations against Islamic State affiliates in West Africa.
