The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised alarm over the increasing number of fake social media accounts claiming to represent him.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, speaking for the Okwu-Kanu family, said the fraudulent accounts often use official-looking logos and misleading location tags, including false claims of being based in Nairobi or Sokoto, to mislead followers.

The family clarified that since Kanu’s detention in June 2021, he has not maintained any verified presence on Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media platform. He does not post messages, share updates, or engage with the public online.

Describing the impersonation as a “deliberate scheme,” the family warned that the fake accounts are being used to collect personal information, spread false narratives, and put genuine supporters at risk of harassment or surveillance.

The statement urged the public to avoid following or interacting with suspicious accounts and to report them as scams or impersonations. It also encouraged relying on verified IPOB channels and trusted media outlets, such as Radio Biafra, for accurate updates.

Reaffirming Kanu’s commitment to the peaceful pursuit of Biafran self-determination, the family concluded by reiterating calls for his unconditional release and warning against attempts to mislead the public through these fake accounts.
