Amnesty International has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the alleged killing of two residents of Abuja by an officer of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The human rights organisation said the incident occurred in the Karmajiji area of the Federal Capital Territory, where a DSS operative reportedly opened fire on civilians, leaving three people injured. Two of the victims later died from gunshot wounds.
According to Amnesty International, one of the victims died shortly after the shooting, while the second succumbed to his injuries days later while receiving medical treatment in Abuja.
In a statement, the organisation described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that the officer involved is promptly investigated and, if found culpable, prosecuted in line with the law.
Amnesty International also expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of excessive use of force by security personnel, particularly in situations that do not warrant lethal action. The group warned that failure to hold security agents accountable could further undermine public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
The organisation called on the government to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure justice for the victims and their families, stressing that accountability is essential to prevent future abuses.
