The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong displeasure over what he described as the Rivers State Government’s refusal to grant approval for the use of the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium for a political event.
Speaking on Saturday during a visit to Rivers State, Wike claimed that an official request was submitted to the state government to use the facility but was turned down without justification. He argued that public assets in the state should be accessible to all groups, regardless of political differences.
The former Rivers State governor warned that continued denial of access to state-owned facilities could deepen political tensions, insisting that no authority has exclusive control over public infrastructure meant to serve the people. His comments, delivered in a fiery tone, quickly drew attention and reactions across political circles.
Wike’s remarks have since sparked debate, with observers calling for restraint and respect for the rule of law amid rising political rivalry in the state. As of the time of reporting, the Rivers State Government has not issued an official response to the minister’s claims.
