Allegations of Vigilante Brutality Spark Fear and Outcry in Imo Community

Residents of an autonomous community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State are reportedly living in anxiety following allegations of abuse of power against a local vigilante leader popularly known as Nwagbenta.

Community members claim the vigilante group has operated beyond its mandate, allegedly subjecting residents to intimidation, illegal arrests, and extortion. According to locals, individuals are said to be detained without due process at a private location controlled by the group, with families pressured to pay money for their release.

The situation is believed to have worsened due to what residents describe as weak security presence in the area, creating a vacuum that allowed the vigilante outfit to assume excessive control. Many locals are said to be afraid to speak openly, fearing retaliation.

Tensions escalated after allegations emerged that two young men lost their lives in separate incidents linked to the vigilante group, raising concerns about unlawful killings and the misuse of authority.

Human rights advocates and concerned residents are now calling on security agencies and the Imo State Government to urgently intervene, investigate the allegations, and restore lawful order to prevent further breakdown of peace in the community.
