A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and 2027 Abia governorship aspirant, Mascot Uzo Kalu, has called for deeper, people-focused economic reforms in Abia State, saying many residents are still waiting to experience the direct benefits of the government’s economic agenda. Speaking during a Media engagement in Umuahia, Kalu said citizens welcomed promises of economic revival but now want to see stronger impact at the household and small-business level.

According to him, traders, artisans, transport operators, and young entrepreneurs continue to face daily financial pressure despite policy announcements aimed at improving the business climate. He noted that access to affordable credit and reduced multiple taxation remain major concerns for small and medium-scale enterprises. “Economic policies must leave government papers and enter people’s pockets,” he said, stressing that visible relief at the grassroots is what builds public confidence.

Kalu suggested a series of measures he believes could accelerate economic recovery in the state. He proposed the creation of a structured small-business support fund with low-interest loans, grants for start-ups driven by youths and women, and stronger partnerships with microfinance institutions to expand credit access. He also recommended the development of industrial clusters in Aba and Umuahia where small manufacturers could share power, equipment, and logistics infrastructure to cut operating costs and boost local production.

On employment, the APC figure advocated for vocational and digital skills programs tied directly to industry needs. He said government-backed apprenticeship schemes and public-private partnerships could help bridge the gap between training and actual jobs. In addition, he called for deliberate investment in agriculture value chains, including storage, processing, and market access, to help farmers earn more while creating jobs in food processing and distribution.

Kalu maintained that his comments were aimed at offering constructive alternatives rather than mere criticism. He urged the state government to improve communication with citizens by publishing clear timelines, budget performance reports, and measurable economic targets. “People want to see where we are going and how we are getting there,” he said, adding that economic progress must be inclusive and felt beyond major cities. As political conversations gradually turn toward 2027, he noted, the real measure of leadership will be how well policies translate into improved livelihoods for ordinary Abians.
