The Rivers State Government has denied allegations that it prevented FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a pro-Tinubu group from using the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt for an event. Officials stated that the stadium is currently undergoing major renovation and is not safe for public gatherings.
Government representatives explained that the facility is a construction zone with unstable ground and heavy machinery, making it unsuitable for large-scale activities. They also noted that no formal application to use the stadium had been received by the authorities.
Wike had claimed that the state government refused their request to use the stadium, warning that future denials could be met with force. Rivers State officials, however, described these claims as misleading and politically motivated.
Authorities urged political actors to focus on constructive engagement and reminded them that alternative government-owned venues are available for events. The dispute has intensified discussions about the use of public facilities for political purposes ahead of the 2027 elections.
