A prominent socio-cultural group in Abia State has pledged ₦100 million to support Governor Alex Otti’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 governorship election, signalling early political mobilisation and growing support for the administration in the state.
The pledge was made by the Ukwa La Ngwa people of Abia State during a grand civic reception organised in honour of the governor at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, the state’s major commercial hub.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the donation was a collective effort by members of the Ukwa La Ngwa community. The group said the funds were specifically raised to enable the purchase of Governor Otti’s nomination form whenever the re-election process formally begins.
Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and chairman of the steering committee for the reception, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the gathering as a demonstration of unity and confidence in the governor’s leadership.
He noted that the Ukwa La Ngwa people were firmly committed to supporting Otti’s second-term ambition and were prepared to make additional contributions if the need arose.
Addressing the large crowd at the event, Governor Otti expressed gratitude for what he described as an overwhelming show of support, adding that the turnout reflected the confidence of Abia residents in his administration’s developmental agenda.
“This is your government, and your interest will always come first. Governance in Abia is no longer driven by personal or partisan interest,” the governor said.
Otti, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party, has consistently highlighted infrastructure renewal, education reforms and urban development as key priorities of his administration.
During the reception, the governor announced that Ovom Road would be commissioned on February 25. He also revealed that work would formally commence on the reconstruction of Enyimba Hotel, which is expected to be upgraded into a five-star hospitality facility to be managed by Radisson Blu.
“Our approach is not to flag off projects and abandon them. We want the hotel to be completed and functional by next year,” Otti assured.
The governor further urged residents of Aba and other parts of the state to ensure they register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that voter participation remains essential for political representation and accountability.
“The population of Aba far exceeds the number of votes recorded here. Registration and participation are the only ways to demonstrate political strength,” he said.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the occasion and Board of Trustees Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, described the event as a reflection of public approval of Governor Otti’s performance in office.
“This gathering is not a party rally but a people’s verdict on governance,” Wabara said, adding that Abia residents would defend their electoral mandate in future polls.
Also speaking, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, alongside the Labour Party National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, commended the governor’s policies across various sectors, noting that they had earned him broad-based support beyond party lines.
Traditional rulers from Ukwa La Ngwa communities also pledged their continued backing for the governor, while cultural performances added colour to the occasion.
The event was attended by federal and state lawmakers, senior political figures, community leaders and thousands of supporters who gathered to celebrate what organisers described as the governor’s achievements so far.
InThe pledge and reception underscore the growing political momentum surrounding Governor Otti as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 election season in Abia State.
