The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to delay a planned protest in Abuja that was scheduled for Tuesday, citing potential security threats.
Union leaders had announced a peaceful rally to support workers involved in a dispute with the FCT Administration over unpaid entitlements.
The police acknowledged the right to peaceful assembly but warned that elements outside the unions could exploit the demonstration, putting public safety at risk.
Authorities said rescheduling the protest would help prevent disruptions to daily activities and protect citizens, urging organisers to select a later date.
Tension has been rising as striking workers push for resolution on welfare issues, drawing support from organised labour bodies.
