2027 Abia Governorship Aspirant Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC, has urged the Abia State Governor to take a cue from the proactive leadership style of Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum by fully implementing local government financial autonomy.

Kalu commended Governor Zulum for his bold directive ensuring that funds meant for local government areas are released directly to the council chairmen, allowing them to manage and execute projects that impact grassroots development without interference.

According to him, genuine development can only be achieved when local government administrations are empowered to function independently, as constitutionally intended. He stressed that direct access to funds would enhance transparency, accountability, and rapid delivery of basic amenities at the community level.

He therefore called on the Abia State Government to adopt similar measures, emphasizing that granting full financial autonomy to local government councils would not only deepen democracy but also restore the true purpose of governance at the grassroots. Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu stressed that when council chairmen have direct control over their allocations, critical projects such as rural roads, primary healthcare, sanitation, and basic education can be executed more efficiently without unnecessary bureaucratic bottlenecks.
