Lagos Assembly Halts Makoko Demolitions Amid Rising Resident Protests

The Lagos State House of Assembly has stepped in to suspend demolitions in Makoko and neighboring waterfront communities, ordering an immediate stop to all clearance operations that had displaced residents.

During a meeting with key stakeholders at the legislative complex in Alausa, lawmakers announced that demolition activities in Makoko, Oko‑Agbon, and Shogunro must be suspended until further notice.

The decision follows growing protests and pressure from community members and civil society groups who criticized the removal of homes along parts of the waterfront. A taskforce is expected to engage with affected residents to ensure their concerns are addressed in future redevelopment plans.

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, said the demolitions were intended to improve safety near high-tension power lines and enhance living conditions, adding that funds have been set aside for redevelopment.
