The Obi of Onitsha has explained why burial traditions in his community have recently been condensed into a one-day event. Palace officials said the move aims to make funeral rites more manageable for families while still honoring essential customs.

According to the traditional council, the cost and complexity of extended ceremonies were becoming overwhelming for many households. By condensing the rites — normally spread over several days — into a single day, families can uphold cultural values without the heavy financial burden of prolonged observances.

The palace emphasized that all key traditional rituals still take place, but within a tighter schedule that respects both custom and the economic realities faced by the community. The one-day format ensures that important ceremonial practices are preserved while avoiding unnecessary strain on families.

This adjustment reflects broader efforts among some Igbo communities to adapt ceremonies to contemporary life. By streamlining the process, the monarchy seeks to balance cultural preservation with practical considerations in modern society.

Officials maintained that the one-day ceremony remains a significant event, marking the deceased’s passage with dignity and respect. The change is intended to make traditions more sustainable, ensuring that customs can continue without creating hardship for families.
