SAN Status Is Earned Honour, Not Shield From Sanctions — Attorney-General Warns

The Attorney-General of the Federation has stated that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title is a professional honour that comes with strict ethical obligations and can be withdrawn if a holder violates legal conduct rules. He stressed that the designation should not be seen as protection against disciplinary action.

Speaking at a legal industry gathering, he noted that the rank is awarded based on merit and integrity, and those standards must be maintained throughout a recipient’s career. He cautioned that any abuse of the privilege could trigger a formal review and possible removal of the title.

He explained that established oversight bodies within the legal profession are empowered to investigate complaints and apply sanctions where necessary. According to him, maintaining discipline within the bar is essential to preserving public trust in the justice system.

The Attorney-General also encouraged senior lawyers to lead by example, mentor younger practitioners, and uphold the highest standards of courtroom and professional behavior.
