Peter Obi Joins Protest at National Assembly for Transparent Election Results

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi participated in a rally at the National Assembly in Abuja, where protesters called on lawmakers to reinstate mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results. The demonstrators argued that such measures are essential to prevent errors or “glitches” that have undermined trust in past elections.

The protest, tagged “Occupy National Assembly,” included youth activists, supporters of electoral reforms, and civil society members who marched to the assembly gates, expressing concern over changes to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill that they say weaken transparency and open the door to post-poll manipulation.

Speaking at the event, Obi emphasised that Nigerians should not have to endure the same problems seen in previous elections and urged legislators to ensure future polls are credible by legally requiring real-time electronic result reporting.

Security personnel from the police, army, and other agencies monitored the demonstration, which remained peaceful despite the heightened tensions surrounding ongoing debates on electoral reforms.
