The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has confirmed that it has made payments to numerous tertiary institutions on behalf of students who applied for financial support. The initiative aims to help students continue their education without being hindered by tuition and other school fees.
Payments have been sent to about 265 universities, polytechnics, and colleges, covering institutional charges for roughly 1.5 million student applications submitted through the loan programme. Officials say this move is designed to ease the financial burden on students and their families.
The NELFUND scheme provides interest-free loans with flexible repayment plans, allowing students to repay after graduation and employment. Administrators stressed that coordination with schools is crucial to ensure that no student is excluded from exams or classes while support is being processed.
While some challenges remain in verification and disbursement at certain campuses, the agency is working to resolve them quickly so all eligible students can benefit. Advocates say the programme could significantly reduce dropout rates linked to financial hardship and expand opportunities for young Nigerians seeking higher education.
