Sowore Calls for Digital Voting to Reform Nigeria’s Elections

Human rights campaigner and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has urged Nigerian lawmakers to modernize the electoral process by adopting digital solutions. He argued that the same technologies used for everyday electronic transactions could also be applied to voting and result transmission.

Sowore made the comments while addressing controversy over changes to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, particularly the section dealing with how election results are communicated and tallied. He questioned why the country hesitates to fully integrate electronic methods in elections when citizens already use digital systems to carry out secure and sensitive activities like mobile banking.

Highlighting public frustration with existing practices, Sowore argued that many elected officials are reluctant to strengthen transparency measures because genuine openness could threaten their political positions. He emphasized that a credible digital system for elections would help restore confidence in Nigeria’s democratic processes ahead of future polls.
