Ebonyi Community Seeks Global Action Over Alleged Rights Violations

Leaders of the Amasiri community in the Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have appealed to international and national human rights organisations to investigate what they describe as serious violations of their civil liberties and fundamental rights.

In a petition dated February 9, 2026, the community’s legal representative accused Governor Francis Nwifuru of authorising an excessive security operation linked to a long‑standing land dispute with the neighbouring Oso community of Edda.

The petition was sent to several international bodies, including the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Human Rights Council, as well as domestic organisations such as the National Human Rights Commission.

According to the community, soldiers deployed to the area conducted operations that allegedly resulted in deaths, the destruction of homes, public buildings and schools, and the looting of personal property. Civilians were reportedly prevented from registering for and taking national exams.

The Amasiri leaders described these actions as collective punishment imposed without fair investigation or due process and called for urgent intervention to protect civilians, allow children to return to school, and ensure accountability for any crimes committed.

The petition further requested that countries such as the United States and members of the European Union consider sanctions or visa restrictions if violations are confirmed.
