A traditional ruler from Enugu State has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, urging that the separatist leader either be released or returned to the country where he was arrested.
Speaking at a national gathering of traditional rulers and community leaders, Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu, the Eze Ogbunechendo of Ezema Olo Kingdom, said Kanu’s continued imprisonment is fueling unrest among youths in the South‑East and weakening confidence in traditional institutions. He suggested that if the federal government does not want Kanu in Nigeria, he should be sent back to Kenya or the United Kingdom, where he has prior connections.
The monarch also criticized what he described as inconsistent treatment of regional activists, warning that unresolved grievances could intensify youth agitation and make it harder for community leaders to support government programs.
Kanu, founder of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was convicted on terrorism-related charges and is serving a life sentence. His arrest abroad before being brought back to Nigeria remains a subject of controversy and public debate.
