Traders in Nnewi, Anambra State, were thrown into chaos after a fire swept through a prominent electrical and hardware market, destroying numerous stalls and merchandise. The fire, which broke out in the early morning hours, quickly spread, forcing business owners to evacuate and salvage whatever they could.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “frantic,” with flames consuming stocks of electrical appliances, cables, and tools. Many traders reported significant financial losses, warning that the destruction could push some out of business entirely.
Market officials have appealed to both state authorities and humanitarian organizations to provide urgent relief for affected traders, stressing that many operate on daily earnings and cannot recover without assistance.
Firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops and residential areas. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, while calls for improved fire‑safety measures in crowded commercial hubs grow louder.
