The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has launched a statewide vaccination campaign against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), targeting about 1.5 million cattle in a bid to curb the spread of the disease.

The exercise, which was flagged off in Bunkure Local Government Area, is part of a broader effort to safeguard animal health and protect public health across the state.

Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, described the campaign as a critical step toward ensuring safe and healthy sources of protein for residents. Represented at the event by a veterinary public health and epidemiology expert, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad, the commissioner said the vaccination would cover all 44 local government areas of Kano State.

According to him, the initiative forms part of a comprehensive strategy to control and eventually eliminate contagious livestock diseases. He emphasized that improving animal health and strengthening livestock production remain key priorities of the state government.

Dr. Abubakar explained that CBPP is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that significantly reduces cattle productivity, causing weight loss, decreased milk output, poor meat quality, and in severe cases, death. He noted that the disease poses serious economic threats to livestock farmers and could indirectly impact food security and public health.

He therefore urged livestock farmers, herders, and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with veterinary officials by presenting their animals for vaccination.

The commissioner stressed that collective action is essential to successfully contain the disease, adding that preventing CBPP through vaccination will ensure the availability of healthy and high-quality livestock products across the state.
