Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has conveyed warm greetings to Muslims in the state, across Nigeria and around the world as they commence the holy month of Ramadan.
Governor Zulum described Ramadan as a sacred period of spiritual renewal, discipline, sacrifice and compassion. He noted that fasting is not only about abstaining from food and drink, but also about purifying the heart, strengthening faith and extending kindness to the less privileged.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor urged Muslims to devote the month to intensified prayers, supplication and acts of charity. He added that Ramadan reinforces the Islamic values of peace, tolerance, unity and mutual respect.
Zulum observed that this year’s Ramadan coincides with relative peace in Borno State and a successful harvest from the last farming season. On Tuesday, he flagged off the distribution of Ramadan palliatives to 300,000 households across the 27 local government areas of the state to ease economic hardship among vulnerable residents. He noted that the support would also extend to Christians observing Lent during the same period.
Reflecting on Borno’s recovery from over a decade of insurgency, the governor acknowledged the resilience and sacrifices of the people. He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain security gains, rebuild damaged infrastructure, resettle displaced persons and restore livelihoods.
“Our government remains committed to consolidating the progress made in security through collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies. We are rebuilding schools, hospitals, roads and markets, while supporting farmers, traders and youths to revive economic activities in liberated communities,” Zulum said.
He stressed that despite the strides recorded in reconstruction and rehabilitation, continued prayers and unity are essential to maintaining peace and stability in the state and the country at large. He called on the Muslim faithful to use the Ramadan period to pray for enduring peace, prosperity and national unity, and to support widows, orphans and families affected by insurgency.
Governor Zulum also extended his goodwill to Christians marking the Lenten season, noting that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent highlights the importance of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.
He prayed for the acceptance of the faithful’s fasting, prayers and good deeds, and for sustained peace and development in Borno State and Nigeria.
