NBA Steps In After Ex-Presidential Aide Arrested in Cross River

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has pledged to monitor the arrest of Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, a former presidential aide and practicing lawyer, following reports of his detention in Cross River State. Authorities arrested Obono-Obla on Thursday over allegations of forgery and acquiring legal qualifications under false pretences.

Police confirmed that Obono-Obla was taken into custody around noon at Abuja Park, Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, following a formal petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police. They denied claims circulating online that he had been kidnapped or abducted.

After his arrest, Obono-Obla was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar, where inquiries are ongoing. His legal team and family have been informed and are actively involved in the process.

The NBA’s Calabar branch expressed concern over the unclear circumstances surrounding the detention. Chairman Enome Amatey emphasized that the association will ensure due process is followed, rights are protected, and proper legal representation is provided. The NBA may involve its human rights committee if necessary.
