Fire at Murtala Muhammed Airport Traps 10 People, Many Rescued

A significant fire broke out on Monday at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, prompting a large-scale emergency response as smoke and flames spread through the old terminal building.

Emergency crews, including airport firefighters and state rescue teams, battled the blaze that reportedly began near a server room before reaching upper floors. All 14 people initially trapped in the control tower area were safely evacuated. Six individuals sustained minor injuries, with one person taken to the hospital for observation.

The fire has been largely contained, though smoke and heat initially slowed efforts and forced the temporary suspension of some airport activities. Several flights were diverted, and the airport airspace was momentarily closed while the situation stabilized.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started from electrical equipment, but a full investigation is underway to determine the cause and assess structural safety before reopening. Authorities praised the coordinated response that prevented loss of life and minimized damage.
