Nigeria to Include Diaspora Athletes in 2026 Intermediate Games

Nigerian athletes living abroad will have the opportunity to compete in the National Intermediate Games in Lagos, representing the country and adding depth to the competition.

Around 50 diaspora athletes are expected to participate, competing as a symbolic “38th state” at the games. Officials say the initiative aims to identify and nurture emerging talent while boosting Nigeria’s performance in international competitions.

The National Sports Commission highlighted the role of the Diaspora Discovery Athletes Committee in recruiting and preparing these athletes. Organisers believe that involving competitors from across the globe will enhance the quality of the games and strengthen Nigeria’s sports pipeline for future events.
